Sustainable waste management for better world

Turning waste into wealth is the heart of a circular economy; organic waste isn’t a burden—it’s a resource waiting to regenerate our planet.

To effectively address the issue of organic waste, ENVACO will collaborate with community groups, including women and youth groups, to implement pilot projects focused on sustainable waste management solutions. These projects will be carefully selected based on thorough research and will aim to test the feasibility and effectiveness of various organic waste treatment technologies. ENVACO will provide training and guidance to these community groups throughout the project lifecycle, empowering them to become active participants in the waste management process and build sustainable solutions within their communities.

USE OF ORGANIC WASTE TOWARDS sUSTAINABLE CITIES AND ECONOMIES

Join us in transforming waste into opportunity! Together, we can achieve the SDGs, reduce landfill waste, and build a sustainable future. Your support can make a world of difference.

Food Waste Dryer and Feeding Complete Equipment

The Food Waste Dryer and Feeding Complete Equipment project by ENVACO transforms organic food waste into high-quality animal feed through a process of collection, drying, and pelletization. This initiative reduces landfill waste and methane emissions while providing farmers with a cost-effective, nutritious alternative to traditional livestock feeds.

The Project of Rearing Pigs, Cows and Poultry

ENVACO’s integrated livestock farming project focuses on rearing pigs, cows, and poultry, utilizing high-quality animal feeds produced from their waste management processes. This sustainable approach enhances productivity, reduces reliance on commercial feeds, and creates a closed-loop system by converting animal manure into organic fertilizer for crop farming.

The Project of Black Soldier Fly (BSF) Farming

ENVACO’s Black Soldier Fly (BSF) farming initiative utilizes community-collected organic waste to rear BSF larvae, which are then processed into high-protein feed for poultry and fish, offering an eco-friendly alternative to traditional feeds. This sustainable approach not only reduces organic waste but also produces organic fertilizer from residual materials, enriching agriculture and creating local employment opportunities.

Project of Producing Fertilizers from Organic Waste

ENVACO’s project focuses on converting organic waste residues from their waste processing and Black Soldier Fly (BSF) farming activities into high-quality organic fertilizers. This initiative involves composting biodegradable waste, enriching it with essential nutrients to meet local crop needs, and promoting sustainable farming practices by reducing reliance on synthetic fertilizers.

Our organization is launching a project aimed at providing essential safety gear to landfill workers and waste collectors. These individuals, often exposed to hazardous conditions, will receive free, high-quality protective equipment including masks, gumboots, and dustcoats on a regular basis.

The project is designed to ensure their well-being and improve working conditions, reducing the risk of injury and health issues caused by prolonged exposure to waste.

A project aimed at simplifying waste management by promoting sorting at the source. Through the distribution of special green bags to homesteads, apartments, institutions, and hotels, we aim to encourage efficient segregation of waste materials. This initiative will not only make waste sorting more accessible but also play a key role in reducing contamination in recycling streams.

let's manage organic waste

less waste, better health, cleaner environment

ENVACO’s analysis highlights that improper waste disposal in Nairobi leads to severe environmental contamination, including soil and water pollution from toxic leachate, and air pollution due to open burning of waste. These practices pose significant health risks to nearby communities, such as respiratory issues, infectious diseases, and increased cancer rates, while also contributing to social and economic challenges like diminished local livelihoods and environmental degradation.

ENVACO explores the feasibility of establishing modern, safe landfills in Kenya, emphasizing engineered designs that include multi-layered liners, leachate collection and treatment systems, and methane gas capture to mitigate environmental hazards. Implementing such facilities would address the challenges posed by traditional open dumpsites, enhancing public health and environmental protection.

Landfills in Kenya, such as Nairobi’s Dandora site, are poorly managed, leading to environmental degradation and public health risks. They leach toxic substances into soil and groundwater, emit methane—a potent greenhouse gas—contribute to air pollution, and pose health hazards to nearby communities.

Joint efforts

various stakeholders have participated in waste management in kenya

Donors and international bodies have been instrumental in the progress of waste management initiatives, and their continued support will be key to creating a sustainable future, where innovation, collaboration, and resource conservation are the foundation of cleaner, greener communities.”

The World Bank has been instrumental in supporting waste management initiatives globally, providing financing, technical expertise, and policy guidance to enhance waste management systems. In Kenya, the World Bank has financed projects aimed at improving waste management infrastructure, such as the Nairobi Metropolitan Services Improvement Project (NaMSIP), which focuses on enhancing urban services, including waste management, in Nairobi.

Financial institutions have played a transformative role in Kenya’s waste management journey, funding large-scale projects and supporting grassroots innovations to address critical gaps in infrastructure and resources. Their contributions have been essential in creating a cleaner, healthier environment, and their continued involvement is vital as Kenya prioritizes sustainability.

In Kenya, several non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are leading transformative waste management initiatives, supported by international donors. These organizations are implementing innovative projects that address waste challenges, promote recycling, and enhance environmental conservation.
